Analysis by Protea: a collection of sketches and drawings using different techniques. This work was inspired by a phenomenal plant, the PROTEA CAROIDES, also known as silver tree, sugar bush or feather bush. The name protea was assigned in 1735 by the Swedish naturalist Linnaeus. Impressed, and somewhat confused, by the different varieties, Linneaus named the plant after the Greek god Proteus and his ability to change his appearance as he likes.
We used a variety of techniques, touch, charcoal, crayon, pencil, neocolor and watercolor, to mimic nature’s diversity. Further, we used different printing techniques; linolcut printing, stamping, contact printing, material printing, gravure printing and cardboard printing. The designs and sketches form the basis for products such as tile or carpet designs as well as various designs for wallpaper or upholstery fabrics.Through experiments with different materials and inspired by the protea plant, we developed a modern, spacious, timeless and graphic carpet design. We created unique ornaments by multiplying, mirroring and rotating, the basic pattern with design software.
