In this experiment, we aimed to portray a fabric like a flower. It should feel and appear like the ageing process of a wilting flower. We were testing a variety of different fabrics with prints from both sides and used lasers to burn areas. The decay of the fabric increases the cloth’s transparency, in particular with some areas falling out entirely. An interesting play with layers - like a flower head. The Idea of the two sides of this cloth was to partially laser cut areas to create a three-dimensional appearance.
The artist was blessed with a peaceful childhood, growing up with a wide, colourful garden. She was always charmed by flowers and searched for ways to capture a flower field on textile – or a bunch of flowers. The wilting of a flower is a metaphor for life itself. It was a hard choice between many flowers; there are so many flowers. We live in a consumerist society. This project expresses peer pressure and superfluity in modern society. We scream to break free; even something as lovely as flowers can sometimes be too much.
